History
As with many other French vineyards, the Romans introduced wine growing to the area. Some of its products have been famous for a long time, like Cahors wine which was already exported to England as far back as the 13 th century.
The monks of the Monastery of Madiran also produced a wine which was highly regarded by the French King Francis 1 st and by English Kings alike :
the Madiran obtained its A.O.C. appellation in 1948. Unfortunately the proximity of its better known neighbour and the absence of usable road links thwarted the growth of a vineyard already weakened by the phylloxera crisis.
But since the seventies it has managed to become the unique vineyard we now know.
